Phish - Undermind June 21, 2004 - E! Music Daily By Staff Album Review - Undermind With the recent announcement that they're calling it quits before they lose their creative spark, the arrival of the 11th--and final--album by Phish is bittersweet. But it's also a fitting finale, since the live-sounding disc recalls both Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos, two other bands who also quit while they were ahead. With a warm groove, liberal use of percussion and an off-the-cuff looseness that is usually lost in the studio, "A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing" finds them rockin' out like it's the middle of a rather good set. The piano-driven ballad "Army of One" comes off like a lost Steve Winwood cut. And the title track chugs along as if it were still the lazy, hazy '70s. Granted, the guys should end with a killer live album, and still may, but as studio swan songs go, this sounds pretty darn good. Review © 2004 E! Music Daily
