Album Review - Trey Anastasio
3 Stars.
You'd figure that after spending close to 20 years fronting Phish that Trey Anastasio would want to step into a distinctly unique, sonic landscape. The overriding feel of this 12-song self-titled debut, though, is live and improvisational. While that's good news to Phish phans who haven't known quite what to do with themselves since the band went on hiatus in 2000, the balance of the music-buying public may be sensing déjà vu. To his credit, Anastasio isn't afraid to step out with hints of Latin flavor ("Alive Again"), Sting-like world rhythms ("Drifting") and even a funk approach complete with a rollicking four-piece horn section ("Money, Love and Change"). "Flock of Words" is a simply arranged yet gorgeously performed ballad. The instrumental "At the Gazebo," where a moody horn intro gives way to an elegant orchestral piece that supports an Anastasio acoustic guitar run, highlights Anastasio's new approach. In just three minutes, he proves that his future is indeed bright.
