Album Review - Trey Anastasio

Yes, guitarist-singer/songwriter Trey Anastasio's solo band is tighter, more straight-ahead and less reliant on the aimless jam than Phish. And, yes, it's fun to hear the horn-and-guitar-propelled mix of funk, lounge and Latin-lite styles Anastasio essays on his own.

But "Trey Anastasio" has the same problem as most Phish albums: Cleverness, chops and jamming simpatico can't disguise the fundamental weakness of the songwriting. For Phish phanatics only. (Tonight at the Tweeter Center.)
