Album Review - Trey Anastasio

After buying up all those live discs this year, do you really think Phish fans are gonna get hooked by another band-related release? Of course they are. And their money will be well spent, since this solo disc by Phish phrontman Trey Anastasio offers some delicious bait. Just a sample of where the jam-band leader wanders: A horn section gives him some added funk on the samba-flavored "Alive Again," and "Mr. Completely" rocks harder than the entire group usually does. But he gets the old-school jam-rock out, too. Thanks to its soulful backup singers, "Cayman Review" recalls songs from Phish's Hoist, while the infusion of jazz and reggae on "Ether Sunday" sounds like something they might've tried on 1991's A Picture of Nectar. A good catch.
