Album Review - Round Room

Please come 'round here another day, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio sings on "46 Days," one of the more rollicking numbers from the band's curiously sanguine new album. It's been way more than 46 days since the Vermont quartet last was heard from, and the band's two-year hiatus probably had some followers wondering whether Phish ever planned to come 'round again.

Now that the band is back, "Round Room" proves Phish hasn't lost its talent for extended, jazz-inflected jams, even if it seems to have lost its taste for harder-edged rock. Several songs clock in at 10 minutes or more, from the evocative opener, "Pebbles and Marbles," to the impressionistic final track, "Waves." It's a mellow trip all the way, and if it's heavy on the improv, few bands can do it as well as this one.
