Clever quartet
February 4, 1993 - The Boston Globe

Album Review - Rift
While still an acquired taste, Phish is tipping the scales toward mainstream consumption. The Vermont band - which plays the Providence Performing Arts Center tonight - smooths out the eclectic quirks on its fourth album. The shifty flow of "The Wedge" and "All Things Reconsidered" may still remind of the Grateful Dead. But Phish has dug its own pond, where art-rock and bluegrass influences blend in songs like "Rift" and "Sparkle." The clever quartet still gets too silly in "Weigh" and recurring sleep-habit jingle "Lengthwise." But a more mature tone creeps in. Veteran soul producer Barry Beckett spruces up the vocals - notably in the reverent "Fast Enough for You" - and lends richness to the acoustic stylings of guitarist Trey Anastasio (in photo) on "My Friend, My Friend" and "Silent in the Morning." However, the highpoint is "Maze," where a syncopated undercurrent leads to driving Hammond organ and guitar solos, letting the listener get lost in Phish's heady ride.
