Album Review - Plasma
When guitar ace Trey Anastasio placed his successful jam band, Phish, on hiatus, it was so he could explore big-band Afro-Cuban noodling on a world tour.
"Plasma" is a live two-disc record gleaned from nine of those shows.
That there are only 12 songs on this two-disc set says all you need to know about whether Anastasio is true to his jamming Phish style.
The noodle bowl is filled on the 21-minute "Inner Tube," a live/studio hybrid where jams were gathered from the tour and stitched together.
Although the songs are Anastasio's compositions, they are reminiscent of the kind of music jazz jammers such as Coltrane, Davis and Santana have already covered.
There is nothing shocking or terribly original here, but it ranks as pretty good background bong music.
