Album Review - Plasma
The real star of Phish frontman Trey Anastasio's first solo live release, the two-disc set "Plasma," isn't his signature guitar or vocals.
It's the horns.
Love 'em or hate 'em, Anastasio surrounds himself with horns when he hits the road without his Phish bandmates. His solo band is so much out front on the 12 songs captured on "Plasma" that Anastasio's guitar becomes just a bit player.
The funk and soul-influenced jams - which clock in as long as 22 minutes each on "Night Speaks" and "Inner Tube" - can tend to get a little monotonous.
At times, you almost want to yell at Anastasio to take control.
But he clearly didn't set out to have his solo band sound like Phish. And in that regard "Plasma" succeeds.
