Judging from their debut album, A Picture of Nectar, PHISH actually incline more towards the punky Steely Dan or frantic early Genesis than to the mellow, countrified noodlings of the Dead which is possibly just as well. They are, at any rate, quite startlingly adept players: Rolling Stone has even gone so far as to call their album 'a dense encyclopaedic monument to chops'.
