Album Review - The Story of the Ghost

Phish are modern masters of the post-hippie jam, but for the most part, the Burlington, Vermont, quartet seems to reserve its real creativity and energy for its marathon concerts. For The Story Of The Ghost, Phish's seventh proper album, the group takes the stream-of-consciousness approach it uses onstage into the studio to deliver the most well-crafted collection of its near 15-year-long career. Overall, Ghost is simpler and more immediate than the band's previous work, allowing Phish to expose its less obvious influences such as the minimalist post-funk of the Talking Heads and the heady pop of the Velvet Underground. The inclusion of the epic tour staple "Guyute" also shows that the boys are remaining true to their granola roots, proving that a steady diet of Phish is just as good with or without the noodles.
