Gordon Gets Down
August 8th, 2008 - The Buffalo News
By Jeff Miers

So Mike Gordon hasn't exactly been spending his down time . . . er, Phishing, if you'll forgive me. After touring with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart's Rhythm Devils - evidence of which can be found in thrilling form on a just-released twin-DVD concert set beneath that band's moniker - Gordon got down to business on his new solo album, "The Green Sparrow."

In keeping with long-established improvisation-based rock traditions, Gordon brought in a bunch of his friends for the project, among them fellow Phish-heads Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell, Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, and the legendary Ivan Neville. The result is, to cop some scribblings from Gordon's own Web site, "an eclectic album boasting [Gordon's] skillful assimilation of free-form rock 'n' roll, calypso, pop and funk."

Gordon will bring his touring edition of the "Green Sparrow" band to the next installment of Thursday at the Square. Earlier in the day, he'll make an in-store appearance at Record Theater, in the University Plaza at Main Street and Kenmore Avenue. Picking up a copy of "The Green Sparrow," which came out Tuesday, guarantees a spot to see Gordon and Co. perform an acoustic set at the store. More information on the in-store is available through 837-2090. The Square show will kick off at 6 p. m. with a set from San Francisco soul singer Samantha Stollenwerck.
