Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon at Mississippi Nights

Critic's Pick: Guitarist Leo Kottke is one of the more talented - and eccentric - guitarists on the acoustic-music scene. Mike Gordon was the bass player for Phish. Not the most likely combination of musicians, but as it turns out, Kottke and Gordon seem to have found common ground in terms of both musical styles and quirky, off-center lyrics. Following up on "Clone," their 2002 duo collaboration, Kottke and Gordon add percussionist Neil Symonette to the mix for new album "Sixty Six Steps." The CD was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, and a subtle Caribbean vibe insinuates itself into the proceedings. Kottke fans know his guitar playing is remarkable, but his singing is an acquired taste. The same evaluation applies to Gordon's musical skills: outstanding bass playing and less-than-stellar vocalizing. So it's not a surprise that some of the strongest cuts on "Sixty Six Steps" are instrumentals, but the CD also offers intriguing cover versions of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" and Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" (featuring Gordon on the baglama, a Turkish instrument with a mandolin-like flavor).
