LOS ANGELES -- Phish, the jam band phenomenon that's calling it quits Sunday night, is plugging in just about every new technology to make sure it goes out on a high note.
The Elektra/Atlantic recording group's scheduled last performance is part of the two-day Coventry Festival in Vermont. All 70,000 tickets sold out weeks ago, but Regal Cine-Media entertainment services will be simulcasting the show in two seven-hour blocks -- via satellite and in high definition -- to 47 Regal Entertainment Group Theatres nationwide.
Phish and Regal did a simulcast once before and sold about 30,000 tickets.
Festival promoter Great Northeast Productions Inc. is leasing a local radio station for the weekend as well. WMOO 92.1 FM is being renamed the Bunny, and will be broadcasting all six of Phish's sets as well as interviews, news and other special content.
The Bunny also can be heard on XM Satellite Radio on two separate channels.
In the buildup to the event, on Aug. 2 many PBS television stations broadcast a 90-minute special called "IT," a documentary of Phish's festival a year ago in Maine. That documentary is being released Oct. 12 on DVD along with interview segments, more than two additional hours of uncut performance and other bonus content.
Another new media feature is an RSS news feed, an efficient way of receiving constant Phish-related news headlines, accessible at Phish.com.
