CDs were gift of choice this year

I keep reading that CD sales are down. This is one case in which I do not represent a trend. Call me old-fashioned, but I still buy CDs -- and lots of them. (One of my resolutions for 2004 is to make a monthly music budget.)

I gave a lot of music for Christmas this year.

My husband received the solo effort by Phish's Mike Gordon, "Inside In," Dan Hicks' "It Happened One Bite" and the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's latest film, "Kill Bill Vol. 1."

Gordon's album is enlightening in that it reveals what Phish's last studio album was largely lacking -- the quirky tunes Gordon was hoarding for his solo album. "Inside In" was overshadowed by Gordon's arrest for child endangerment and trespassing just days before the album's release on Aug. 19. (Gordon was cleared of all charges on Sept. 19.)

Phish-mate Jon Fishman, Béla Fleck, Future Man, Vassar Clements and Col. Bruce Hampton pitch in on the album. I hope some of Gordon's tunes, such as "Soulfood Man," turn up at Phish shows.
