Gone Phish-ing

The goo-ball gobblers will gather again Tuesday when Phish, its hiatus
finished, mixes silly lyrics with serious musicianship at their first
Pittsburgh-area show in three years.
The Vermont jam-band built a giant tour following by encouraging the
community that came with it. The band lets fans tape the anything-goes shows. The
group shook up the set list every night, hopscotching from one long song to the
next, and then on to two more, often teasing a home-base melody between each.
The drummer wore a dress. The guitarist and bassist bounced on trampolines.
Then the band members would unplug, and barbershop a cheeky "Sweet Adelaine."
They never took themselves too seriously. The fans, in their fairy wings,
throwing glow-sticks, polished the pedestal anyway. A Web survey last year found
that 90 percent had seen the band at least 10 times. One-fifth had more than
81 hours of Phish on tape.
That same degree of devotion gets Trekkies beat up.
And now, with the band back - with frontman Trey Anastasio having scratched
his Afrobeat itch - the parking-lot carnival comes our way again. The P-G
Pavilion lots in Burgettstown open at 5 p.m. The show starts two hours later.
Tickets are $39.50. More info: (412) 323-1919.
