Trey Anastasio Among Hundreds Of Jazz Musicians In Burlington This Summer

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- With snow on the ground, it's hard to imagine that one of the Champlain Valley's biggest summertime events is only about eight weeks away.

The lineup for the Burlington Discover Jazz Fest was released Tuesday night for what will be a special year for the festival. There will be some familiar faces headed Burlington's way this year, as well as many new ones -- from local jazz veterans like Big Joe, to kids just learning rhythm by making their own percussion instruments.

"It's showcasing talent the market has not seen and it really is bringing new people to Burlington and discovery is central to the mission," said festival director Elisa Fitzgerald.

The Burlington Discover Jazz Festival turns 20 this year. For two decades, it's been a show starring seasoned pros and high school bands.

"Over the years, we've seen many of these kids who performed on the Marketplace become professional musicians -- including some of the people in Trey Anastasio's band," said Arnie Malina of the Flynn Center.

Anastasio will be one of the headliners this year. The star singer from the band "Phish" is now making a name for himself in the jazz world.

"Categories blur these days. And he certainly performs with jazz performers and many members of his band are great jazz performers," Malina said.

Officials expect 40,000 to 50,000 people to visit Burlington during the festival to hear hundreds of performers. It's expected to be the biggest Jazz Fest ever.

"It is a milestone year. And we're happy to be bringing a stellar lineup to Burlington and the whole region," said Fitzgerald.
