State police are warning of traffic tieups linked to this
weekend's Phish concert in northern Maine.
Sixty-thousand or more fans are expected to descend upon the decommissioned
Loring Air Force Base. The heaviest traffic is expected Friday as fans arrive
and again on Monday when they leave.
Troopers say six people died in traffic accidents the last two times Phish
performed in Maine in 1997 and 1998. They say most of those crashes were caused
by tired drivers.
Already, there has been one concert-related fatality this year. Troopers say
a concert organizer died early Tuesday when when his car struck an embankment
in Limestone. They cited speed and driver fatigue for the death of 43-year-old
James Willox of Dedham, Mass.
