Those who show up at the Greensboro Coliseum today to buy tickets for the March 1 Phish concert will find far fewer seats available than they might have expected.
The band has sold half the tickets via the Internet. The practice, which began among alternative musicians, also is used by more mainstream bands such as the Rolling Stones and Bon Jovi.
"It's very cost-efficient. ... Bands can target the people they want to go after," says Ray Waddell, senior editor for touring for the trade magazine Billboard.
The 11,000 Web-sold tickets have coliseum officials predicting that the Phish concert will be the venue's most heavily attended concert ever. The coliseum's largest attendance came on Feb. 2, 2000, when 22,450 came to see The Backstreet Boys.
