Phish, the alternative rock act known for its improvisational style, is selling downloadable live concert recordings. Visitors to LivePhish.com can download a free MP3 file of the band's Oct. 7, 2000, performance at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, Calif. Other shows cost $10 to download in MP3 format or $13 using the virtually lossless Shorten (.SHN) compression algorithm developed by SoftSound. All of the recordings, which are two to three hours, are high quality and unedited. They were made from the sound board with the full cooperation and approval of Phish. More new and archival files will be added throughout the coming year, most notably the four upcoming New Year's shows, which can be preordered as a package for a discounted price. The downloaded shows come with printable booklets, inlay trays and labels for those who elect to burn the files to CD. None of the downloaded files are protected by digital rights management technology. The Web site merely requests that the material not be pirated, stating: "Live Phish Downloads relies on an honor system, and we ask that you do not abuse the unrestricted nature of these files. If you would like to see this type of delivery of shows continue and flourish, please respect our taping policy and don't abuse the system."
