Phish, the group considered by many to be the nation's reigning jam band, is coming to Greensboro.

The Vermont-based quartet will perform March 1 at the Greensboro Coliseum, says Matt Brown, the coliseum's managing director. Coliseum officials have not determined how much tickets will cost and when they will go on sale.

So far, Greensboro is the only North Carolina performance on the band's tour, which includes 17 U.S. cities, according to its Web site, www.phish.com.

Phish has gained one of rock 'n roll's most devoted followings and a reputation that, like the Grateful Dead's, is built upon its marathon tours and ability to improvise songs on stage.

The band doesn't often make a commercial splash with its records. One of its most popular albums was 1996's "Billy Breathes."
