"Live Phish" - Volumes 13-16 (Elektra, $31.98 per volume) - Phish
Listeners who've never dipped their toe into the pool of Phish music may have no better diving-off point than "Live Phish," volumes 13 through 16.
Each volume contains one Halloween concert from 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1998. These concerts are famous for the band's ambitious task of covering an entire album of another artist they admire, which they refer to as putting on "musical costumes."
These albums are classics: The Beatles' "White Album," The Who's "Quadrophenia," Velvet Underground's "Loaded" and the Talking Heads' "Remain in the Light."
It's a treat for fans to hear the band infuse its own musical take on the well-known albums. Those new to Phish will be impressed by their ability to remain true to the originals.
Even though their take on the originals doesn't always work, the band's moxie at even tackling the "canon" of rock is admirable.
