An impromptu rock supergroup featuring Phish guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio, Primus bassist/vocalist Les Claypool and ex-Police drummer Stewart Copeland has begun recording its debut album.
The band, called Oysterhead, formed for a show at last year's Jazz Fest in New Orleans. The trio began recording Sunday at Anastasio's Vermont studio and plans to spend most of April and May working on the album.
The set, which will feature all original material, is due on Elektra this fall.
In New Orleans, Oysterhead performed covers of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," the Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night," and Desmond Dekker's "The Israelites," among others.
Capitalizing on Phish's extended hiatus, Anastasio recently completed a solo tour of North America.
Claypool, also on a break from his main band, on April 10 will release "Live Frogs -- Set 1," a concert album from his Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. A second edition will follow later this summer.
Copeland recently guested on a second supergroup album of sorts, joining the Damned's Brian James, the MC5's Wayne Kramer, ex-Guns 'N Roses bassist Duff McKagan, and Blondie drummer Clem Burke for Mad for the Racket's "The Racketeers."
