The Live Phish releases summarized

Though Phish has issued three live releases over the course of its career, each taking a different approach to capturing the band’s music, the discs were merely signposts in Phish's richly evolving history. A new series of archival releases, at an expected rate of six shows every six months, will begin to fill in the gaps.

LIVE PHISH 01 - December 14, 1995 - Binghamton, New York Marked by unusual segues, this show captures Phish at the height of the first stage of its career, overflowing with musical ideas and combining absurdism with genuine envelope-pushing.

LIVE PHISH 02 - July 16, 1994 - North Fayston, Vermont A high-energy excursion in Phish's homestate has the band dusting off several novelty numbers (this marks the first official release of the long story-song "Harpua") in a show that is more fun than substantial.

LIVE PHISH 03 - September 14, 2000 - Darien Center, New York A rarity in Phish's later years, these discs highlight Phish engaging in some deeply out playing, slipping beautifully between dissonance and consonance during a long second set sequence bridging The Who's "Drowned" with Talking Heads' "Crosseyed and Painless."

LIVE PHISH 04 - June 14, 2000 - Fukuoka, Japan A small club show on the band's second tour of Japan has the band highlighting recent additions to their songbook, including workouts on Farmhouse's "Back On The Train" and "Twist."

LIVE PHISH 05 - July 8, 2000 - East Troy, Wisconsin A highly fatigued quartet plods through two sets of mostly lackluster playing with strong showings on "Piper" and "Tweezer." Mostly, though, this nicely documents the bloated aimlessness of the band's last tours.

LIVE PHISH 06 - November 27, 1998 - Worcester, Massachusetts Recorded just days after the six-disc Hampton Comes Alive, this volume captures Phish at the height of its arena rock populism. Known among tape collectors as "The Wipe-Out Show," the highly accessible second set segues in and out of the surf classic.
