Phish 'rep' at Red Rocks a real hook

The last time Phish came to Colorado, the band and its fans literally shut down the town of Morrison, clogging the streets and sparking a police crackdown that landed a dozen people in jail.

Once Phish left town after four shows, Fey Concerts announced the band would never play Red Rocks again. Fifteen months later, the group says it hopes to play Red Rocks again and contends it did all it could to keep the situation under control in the summer of '96.

''We understand that our fans are different. At a Phish concert there are certain things you have to deal with in terms of crowds and general security that you don't have to deal with, say, Luther Vandross,'' keyboardist Page McConnell said.

''We do our best to try and accommodate local communities and create a situation where we have as little impact as possible,'' he said. ''The reality is that we flew our security team out to Colorado weeks before the shows to meet with the local authorities, the sheriff, the state police, all those people concerned. We said, 'Look, here's the situation, this is what we think we need to do to ensure we have as low an impact as possible.
