Phish stew, anyone?

Eccentric. Eclectic. Electric. Take your choice of descriptive terms when discussing Phish, the shadowy quartet that fuses so many genres, from pop to jazz to country. Even they aren't sure what to call it.

"We get asked that a lot," bassist Mike Gordon said in a recent interview. "I've never really known what to say. It's just a musical stew." But what Phish has been churning out for the past 11 years has been infectious enough to build them a lasting tribe of followers who worship them in Deadhead-like fashion.

There are plenty of similarities between the Dead and Phish. Onstage, it's pretty much an anything-goes situation with Gordon, along with guitarist Trey Anastasio, pianist Page McConnell and drummer Jon Fishman. They specialize in long, luxurious jams that throw together themes from songs like Tweezer and Llama into a grooving mix.

They must be doing something right, because Phish had some of the highest-grossing concerts of the summer. Phish returns to Tampa at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the USF Sun Dome. Tickets are $ 19.50 through Ticketmaster.
