First Concert of the Year Promises Something Phishy
January 8, 1993 - Rochester Democrat & Chronicle
by Jeff Spevak
Phishhead alert: With an underground network of mailing lists
and word of mouth growing along the lines of the legendary Deadheads,
Rochester's first major1993 concert - well, interesting show
anyway - features Phish Feb. 9 at the Auditorium Center, 875 East
Main St.
It's Vermont rock & jazz at its best, maybe at its only: an
unconventional mix of guitar, bass, drums, organ piano [not a typo;-)],
trombone, vocals and vacuum cleaner. Sometimes drifting to a
danceable islands beat, the band's live show often features guitarist
Trey Anastasio and bass player Mike Gordon bouncing on a trampoline
and drummer/trombonist/vacuum cleaner man Jon Fishman wearing his
"Zero-Man" outfit.
"I try to think of music the way big bands thought of it,"
Anastasio has said. "They'd take a popular song and you'd be able
to listen to it at every level. Someone who likes show tunes would
be able to dance to it. But someone whose ear was more trained would
notice the arrangement was pushing the limits of musical language."
That explains the vacuum cleaner.
Phish, which tours with lead singer Anastasio's dog, Marley,
was here last summer, opening for Santana at the Finger Lakes
Performing Arts Center. [and what a show it was - JW:-)]
The band has two [ahem!] albums out, A PICTURE OF NECTAR
(named for a Burlington, Vt. bar) on Electra, and 1990 independent
release, LAWN BOY. [As usual, Spevak didn't do his homework, as
of course, JUNTA & LAWN BOY were re-released on Elektra - JW]
All tickets are $17 for reserved seats, and are available
starting Jan. 16 at Ticket Express, 100 East Ave., (716-222-5000)
and TicketMaster (716-232-1900).
