Vermont: king of the hills

Vermont, the Green Mountain State, home of Ethan Allen, Ben and Jerry, Cabot cheese, the rock group Phish and countless thousands of black-and-white cows, also is New England's premiere ski state by almost every measure.

Or at least that claim, made two years ago by Vermont Governor Howard Dean, led to one of the slickest ski promotions in many years -- a series of three giant-slalom races among the three northern New England governors and their ski teams, made up of office staff members. Sort of.

It was called the Governor's Cup, and a victory would "prove" which state had the best skiing. By strange coincidence, each governor won the race in his own state and probably will again this year. Because the events got huge press coverage, the real winner was New England skiing.

But Vermont is still the New England heavy, often referred to as "Colorado of the East," and the statistics show why.
