Phish makes a splash

New blood finally hit the album charts this week. The city's charts have been a long-term battle between the Whitney Houstons and Eric Claptons of the world - and they remain on top - but there's some fresh action in the lower Top Ten, paced by a jamming rock 'n' roll band and two rap acts. Next week should see some real jostling, since new albums by Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney will be eligible for the first time. For this week, there's the arrival of Phish's "Rift," which lands this jammin' Burlington, Vt., band at No. 7. And close behind are the two rap acts - Brand Nubian at No. 9 (they'll also perform at the Skycap Plaza next Thursday) and Dr. Dre at No. 10.
Elsewhere, the recent Bobby Brown/Mary J. Blige pairing at the Providence Civic Center is reflected in record sales. Brown's album shot up three notches, while Blige has two hit singles that took a jump in "Real Love" and "Sweet Thing." (Strangely, that's also the title of Jagger's new single. Then again, it's not the most original title in the world, is it?)
What chart column would be complete without a Whitney update? Nationally, her version of "I Will Always Love You" is No. 1 for the 13th straight week, tying the all-time record set by Boyz II Men with "End of the Road." In Boston, though, the song slipped to No. 2. Think she's lost any sleep over it?
