Phish is the choice

Forget the Grateful Dead. The Burlington, Vt., quartet Phish is the choice of a new, longhaired, tie-dyed generation.
From the moment the band took the Lisner Auditorium stage last week until the conclusion of its second 75-minute set, Phish exhibited a magnetism that kept its devotees dancing in the aisles to its eclectic and virtuosic blend of earthy folk rock, blues, reggae, country and a cappella sounds.
When not cranking out catchy tunes such as "Cavern," "Guelah Papyrus" and "Poor Heart," the quartet -- with the aid of a savvy light display -- -- embarked on lengthy, pastoral instrumental tangents. Especially on the songs "Ice" and "Tweezer," vocalist Trey Anastasio let his guitar do the talking. And with bassist Mike Gordon and keyboardist Page McConnell, Anastasio often jammed beautifully. Drummer Jon Fishman contributed away from his drum set too, blowing into the holes of his ubiquitous vacuum cleaner on two tunes.
Local septet Everything proved to be a logical choice for the opening slot, as it displayed its own funk, go-go, jazz, rock and rap influences in an upbeat 40-minute set.
