Go Phish
September 1992 - Vanity Fair magazine
by Melissa Bloom
The four traveling minstrels known from Burlington to
Berkeley as Phish are finally swimming into the mainstream. Their
hybrid of rock and fusion jazz ("a mirror of American music," remarks
singer and guitarist Trey Anastasio) has been dubbed "the hot jam for
the thinking man" by fans, and their lyrics are at once structured and
delirious. Phish has been refining its sound since 1983, and claims
to have an almost mystic fifth member - the music itself. "It's kind
of like the Ouija board," insists bassist Mike Gordon. Even the
recent release of *A Picture of Nector* [italics] (Electra) and their
current tour with genre master Carlos Santana haven't gone to the band
members' heads. "We sat in a limo for the first time yesterday,"
deadpans Gordon. "We called our moms."
